“The Life and Legacy of Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed: Ghanaian Politician and Statesman

Aug 19, 2025 | By: Ismail Akwei

Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed (14 December 1974 – 6 August 2025) was a Ghanaian politician who served as Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation and as a Member of Parliament until his death in a Ghana Air Force helicopter crash in 2025.

Before that, he held the positions of Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations as well as Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry. In December 2024, he was re-elected as Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency.

Murtala began his basic education at Tamale Presby Basic School (Kulikuli School) and later attended Ghana Senior High School, Tamale. He trained as a teacher and obtained a Teacher’s Certificate A from Tamale College of Education, formerly Tamale Training College.

He later earned a Master’s degree in Development Planning from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and another in International Relations and Diplomacy from the University of Ghana.

In 2009, after the NPP government handed over power to the NDC, President John Evans Atta Mills appointed Murtala as Deputy National Coordinator of the National Youth Employment Program (NYEP), which was later rebranded as the Ghana Youth Employment and Development Agency (GYEDA). He served in that role until contesting the 2012 elections, where he won the parliamentary seat for the Nanton Constituency.

Murtala had previously contested the Tamale Central primaries in 2006 and 2008 but lost to Inusah Fuseini. In 2012, however, he secured victory in Nanton, winning 52.66 percent of the vote against incumbent Abdul-Kareem Iddrisu. He lost his re-election bid in 2016 to Mohammed Hardi Tuferu but made a comeback in 2020 when Inusah Fuseini stepped down from Tamale Central.

Murtala won the NDC primaries in 2019 and went on to secure the seat in the general elections with 41,156 votes against the NPP’s Ibrahim Anyars. In 2024, he retained the Tamale Central seat with 52,263 votes. During his time in Parliament, he served on the Public Accounts Committee and the Trade and Industry Committee.

In 2013, President John Mahama appointed him as Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations. After the ministry was merged with Communications, he became Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry under Ekwow Spio-Garbrah until the NDC lost power in 2016.

In January 2025, President Mahama appointed him as the substantive Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, a position he officially assumed in February 2025.

Murtala was a Muslim, married, and a father of three. On 6 August 2025, he died in a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while travelling to Obuasi for an anti-galamsey (illegal mining) operation.

The accident claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Mohammed Muniru, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.

He was buried on 10 August 2025, and a state funeral was held in Accra on 15 August 2025, which was attended by President John Mahama and other dignitaries.
