Biography of the late Joseph Arthur Ankrah

Jun 26, 2025 | By: Ismail Akwei
Joseph Arthur Ankrah (August 18, 1915 – November 25, 1992) was a Ghanaian soldier and political leader who played a crucial role during one of Ghana’s most turbulent times. Rising through the military ranks, Ankrah became the first Chairman of the National Liberation Council (NLC) and served as Ghana’s Head of State from 1966 to 1969.

His leadership began in the aftermath of the 1966 coup that ended Kwame Nkrumah’s presidency, a period marked by uncertainty and the urgent need for stability.

Ankrah’s time in power focused on restoring order and guiding the nation through a delicate transition. Though his rule was brief, it was a defining chapter in Ghana’s political history, as the country grappled with the challenges of governance after Nkrumah’s long tenure.

Remembered for his steady hand during this critical phase, Ankrah’s legacy lies in his role as a stabiliser who helped steer Ghana toward a new political path amid the shifting tides of change.
