Biography of the late Komla Dumor

Komla Afeke Dumor (October 3, 1972 – January 18, 2014) was a renowned Ghanaian journalist and broadcaster best known for his work with BBC World News, where he was the main presenter of the flagship programme Focus on Africa. 

Born in Accra into a family of academics and cultural figures, including his grandfather Philip Gbeho, composer of Ghana’s national anthem, Dumor initially studied medicine before shifting to sociology and psychology at the University of Ghana, later earning a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University. 

Dumor began his media career in Ghana as a radio host and quickly gained recognition, winning the Ghana Journalist of the Year award in 2003. He joined the BBC African Service in 2006 and became a prominent voice in global journalism, known for his balanced and insightful coverage of African affairs. 

He presented major events such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, President Barack Obama’s visits to Africa, and Nelson Mandela’s funeral.

Celebrated for bringing a fresh, authentic perspective to African news, Dumor was named one of the 100 most influential Africans in 2013. 

His warm presence, deep voice, and commitment to telling Africa’s full story earned him respect worldwide. Dumor passed away suddenly in 2014 at age 41, leaving behind a legacy as one of Africa’s finest broadcasters and a powerful voice for the continent on the global stage.
