Edward Kofi Omane Boamah was born on 26 December 1974 in Ghana.

Education and Student Leadership

He attended Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary in Koforidua. He then studied at the University of Ghana Medical School and qualified as a medical doctor. He briefly attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

He also obtained a Master’s degree in Health Policy Planning and Financing from both the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

During this period, he served as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and Coordinating Secretary of the Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association (FGMSA).

Medical Service and Volunteer Work

In 2001, he was part of the medical rescue team during the Accra Sports Stadium disaster. In 2004, he volunteered with the World Health Organization to monitor the Expanded Program on Immunization in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology

Omane Boamah served as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology under President John Atta Mills. During this tenure, he chaired investigations into the spillage of Low Toxicity Oil-Based Mud (LTOBM) by Kosmos Energy and the sodium cyanide spill by Newmont Ghana Gold Limited. He also led a nationwide tree planting campaign and served as Vice Chairman of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD).

Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports and Party Role

He was appointed Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports and simultaneously served as Deputy Campaign Coordinator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2012 general elections.

Minister for Communications and Presidential Spokesperson

He was appointed Minister for Communications by President John Mahama in February 2013. He coordinated Ghana’s participation in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) and was later named Presidential Spokesperson in August 2014, a role he held until January 2017.

During this time, he focused on digital safety and cyber protection. He initiated the establishment of the National Computer Emergency Response Team and the National Committee on Child Online Protection. From 2014 to 2016, he served on the Ghana AIDS Commission Board.

Return to Medical Practice

Following the NDC’s loss in the 2016 elections, Omane Boamah returned to his medical profession, working at Afrah International Hospital.

He was appointed Minister for Defence in February 2025 under the NDC-led government.

Death in Helicopter Crash

Edward Omane Boamah died in a tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi District of the Ashanti Region while en route to Obuasi for an anti-galamsey operation. All eight persons on board perished, including Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, pilot Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, co-pilot Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and crew member Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Legacy and Final Work

His final book, A Peaceful Man In An African Democracy, a biography of former President John Atta Mills, is expected to be published posthumously.
