Ebony Reigns: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Ghana’s Dancehall Icon
Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, widely known as Ebony Reigns, was a Ghanaian singer born on 16 February 1997.
She rose to national fame with hit songs such as "Poison" and "Kupe" and became the first Ghanaian female artist to win the Artiste of the Year award at the Ghana Music Awards.
Ebony grew up in Dansoman, a suburb of Accra, although she hailed from the Brong Ahafo Region. She began her education at Seven Great Princess Academy and later attended Methodist Girls High School in Mamfe. However, she left school to focus on her music career.
Ebony was discovered by musician Bullet of Ruff n Smooth and signed to his label, RuffTown Records. She released her debut single "Dancefloor" in 2015, followed by several major hits including "Kupe," "Sponsor," "Hustle," and "Maame Hw3," the latter addressing the issue of domestic violence. Her music quickly gained popularity and placed her among the top artists in Ghana.
On 8 February 2018, Ebony died in a car accident while traveling from Sunyani to Accra after visiting her mother. Her friend Franklina Yaa Nkansah Kuri and a military officer, Atsu Vondee, also lost their lives in the crash. The driver, Okoh Pinehas Chartey, survived.
Her funeral was held at the State House in Accra, and she was laid to rest at Osu Cemetery. Her passing led to public debates on poor road conditions, spiritual prophecies, and moral judgment about her lifestyle. Some pastors claimed to have foreseen her death, while others criticized the commercial use of her name and image after her passing.
In the aftermath, several celebrities including Sarkodie and Stonebwoy initiated road safety campaigns. On the anniversary of her death, many Ghanaians paid tribute to her on social media. Sarkodie released a song titled "Wake Up Call" featuring Benji, which called on the government to fix bad roads and encouraged stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture also joined efforts to promote road safety. Her record label released a tribute song titled "John 8:7" featuring Wendy Shay to commemorate the third anniversary of her death.
Ebony left a lasting legacy as the youngest and first female Ghanaian artist to release multiple hit singles within a year. Her bold performances and unique fashion sense sparked conversations about gender roles and women's empowerment in Ghana.
Every year, her family visits her grave at Osu Cemetery to honor her memory, followed by a memorial birthday celebration where her favorite meal, jollof rice, is shared. Ebony received numerous awards during her career, including Artist of the Year, Afro Pop Song of the Year, and Album of the Year at the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, making her one of the most celebrated female artists in the country’s music history.
